Sage nodded to the men as she strode through the camp and held her heavy braid off her neck as sweat dripped down her spine. Time at the camp had taught her one very important fact: she was out of shape.
Every day, she trained as hard if not harder than the men. She needed to make up for the time sheâd lost in Scythia. It had been difficult; sheâd practiced when she could, but it wasnât the same as being in the ring with an opponent, let alone with armor. That was what was the worst. The extra pounds of weight she was trying to work with.
Dropping her hair, she tossed back the tent flap, passed through the war room, and pushed aside the second flap leading to their personal quarters. Sage discovered her husband lounging in a large, crude metal tub. Scented oil perfumed the air, and her cooling skin warmed with the veil of aromatic steam. Her eyes rounded at the size and depth of the tub. It had to have taken forever to heat the water and laboriously fill it.
Tehl leaned back with one long leg propped up at the far end of the tub, a glass of spirits clasped lazily in one hand. His inky blue-black hair was handsomely swept back from his face. She blinked at all his exposed, tanned skin, a small flush touching her cheeks. Stars above, her husband was handsome.
His deep voice cut through the haze. âI was wondering when you were going to appear. I was waiting to let you get in first, but the water was beginning to cool, so I climbed in. How was your bout?â
Sage smiled and walked toward him while unbuckling her leather breastplate. âI did well. Iâm sure I can do better.â Carefully, she set the breastplate and her sword on the bed to her right before kneeling beside the tub so their faces were level. âHow is your bath?
âHot.â His gaze caressed her face, while his forefinger traced the curve of her cheek. âWho did you spar with?â
She pursed her lips and answered honestly, even though she knew he wouldnât like the answer. âGarreth.â
Tehlâs gaze cooled, and his lips thinned. âWith the traitor?â
She tilted her face into his hand. âNo one is perfect. And he never meant me any harm.â
âAnd yet you were hurt nonetheless.â He glanced away, his chiseled jaw clenching. âBy all accounts, he should be hung. His life is forfeit for his actions.â
âTrue, and yet he still lives,â she said softly. âYour mercy couldnât have been bestowed on someone worthier. Heâs served with you for a long time, Tehl. You grew up together, as children. If it had been someone else, the punishment wouldâve come much easier. It always hurts more when betrayal comes from those we love, but at least we can forgive.â
Tehlâs sharp, blue eyes snapped back to her. âI havenât forgiven him. I just havenât killed him. Yet.â
Sage closed her eyes briefly and reached for the glass in his other hand.
